Tilt Table Test

A specialised cardiovascular and autonomic test for POTS, vasovagal syncope, dysautonomia, and unexplained dizziness — helping you finally understand why your body reacts the way it does when you stand.

If you experience dizziness when standing, rapid heartbeat when upright, fatigue, fainting, brain fog, or nausea when standing — these symptoms can be frightening and difficult to explain.

Many patients spend months or even years searching for answers. A Tilt Table Test is one of the most useful ways to evaluate how the heart, blood pressure, and nervous system respond to standing.

For many patients, it provides the first objective insight into symptoms that may previously have been misunderstood or dismissed.

All tilt table tests are conducted at CQC-regulated clinical sites in Wigan, Chorley, Manchester, and Salford.

What happens during the test

1

Lie on the tilt table

You lie comfortably on a specialised tilt table with safety straps applied.

2

Monitoring begins

ECG monitors track your heart rhythm and blood pressure is monitored continuously throughout.

3

Table tilts to upright

The table gently tilts to an upright position. Clinicians observe heart rate, blood pressure, and symptoms.

4

Immediate response

If symptoms occur, they are monitored carefully. The table can be returned to flat at any point.

5

Recovery & results

Symptoms usually settle quickly. Most patients can go home the same day with a clear report explaining findings.

What if the test is normal?

A normal result does not mean your symptoms are not real. A normal tilt test may help rule out dangerous circulatory conditions, clarify the mechanism behind symptoms, guide further evaluation, and provide reassurance about cardiovascular stability. In some patients symptoms may relate to interoception differences, proprioceptive instability, or central autonomic regulation differences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the test safe? +

Yes. It is performed under medical supervision with continuous monitoring and can be stopped at any time.

Will I faint during the test? +

Some patients may feel faint, but the test is supervised and the table can be returned to flat immediately. You are never left unsupported.

How long does it take? +

Usually 30–60 minutes, including preparation and recovery.

Can it diagnose POTS? +

It is one of the commonly used tests to help assess POTS — looking for the characteristic excessive rise in heart rate on tilting.

Do I need to prepare? +

Typically you should avoid heavy meals before the test, stay hydrated, and discuss medications with the clinic beforehand. Wear comfortable clothing.

Can I bring someone with me? +

In many cases this is possible — please let us know when booking.

Will symptoms worsen after the test? +

Symptoms during the test are usually temporary and settle quickly when the table returns to horizontal.
